My friend Mohammad Awais helped me create this nifty little Wealth Builder.

What it Does

If you have read my blogs, you know that I advocate investing in index funds and especially the SPY SPDR 500 ETF. This calculator pulls data from Yahoo Finance. You can simulate what you would have earned in returns had you started investing in SPY SPDR 500 ETF on a particular date.

You can test the following indexes and ETF

  • SPY SPDR 500 ETF
  • BSE SENSEX
  • FTSE 100
  • INVESCO QQQ ETF

You can choose the start date of your investment, for example, 5th May 2010.

You can choose how frequently you want to invest, for example, a one-time lump sum or yearly or monthly.

If you choose yearly, and the investment start date was 5th May 2010, then the next date you would invest is on 5th May 2011 and so on. If the date falls on a non-trading day, for example on a weekend or a holiday, the calculator will choose the next available trading day.

You may choose an amount you want to invest, for example, $100 every month or $1500 yearly or $5000/- one-time.

Go ahead and try it out. It is fun to imagine what you could have earned. I hope this will give you some confidence to think about investing a portion of your savings in the markets. Of course what you should invest and for how long depends on your goals, retirement, expected income and how many years you expect to earn said income.

As I always say, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is now.
